​Role overview

Within the correctional environment many of the registered nurses duties and tasks will correlate with your standard nursing practice, however this role provides comprehensive health care through assessment, diagnosis and treatment of inmates. Correctional nurses typically work in jails, detention centers, prisons and youth custody facilities. Nurses can be exposed to individuals with mental illness, aging men and women, youth and culturally diverse individuals. Correctional Nurses are required to display confidence and assertiveness in their role.

Responsibilities and Skills

  • Maintaining proper safety procedures.

  • Properly monitoring medical supplies, like needles and medication. In order to maximise overall safety, correctional nurses learn to limit the use of potentially dangerous materials, like scalpels and intravenous drips.

  • Monitoring patients' progress and responses to medical treatments.

  • Administering medication.

  • Maintaining disease clinics.

  • Documenting patient medical histories.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse with 2+ years’ experience within a hospital/acute setting.

  • Experience in emergency department setting.

  • Evidence of professional development.
